about the project
Inverness Southern Garden
Inspired by the European influences on southern architecture, this garden responds to the architectural narrative of the core home as it evolves and develops over time. In 2010, Roger M. Cooner, Architect, and Tellepsen Landscaping Services collaborated to design this garden that promotes outdoor views of this refined yet casual garden.
While preserving existing trees during construction, the simple gravel drive leads to a flagstone motor court that acts as an extension of the residence and welcomes guests. A small formal garden located off the living room and gallery offers a viewing surprise for the owners to enjoy.
The rear garden was transformed into an open air courtyard, encouraging one out into the garden. A small walk leads around the great lawn to the simple swimming pool. Mature Magnolias provide a backdrop. This garden honors natural southern landscape elements and plants such as a classic sugar kettle, Louisiana iris, azaleas, and flowering Redbud trees. Many of the garden plantings were chosen to re-create the spirit of the owner’s grandmother’s garden.
